$999 Versus $999

The price jump of the RTX 5090 versus the RTX 4090 was not replicated in the RTX 5080, which remains the same price as the RTX 4080 Super. This does make it $300 cheaper than the original RTX 4080; you may recall a large number of early adopters being quite upset when the Super cards arrived and provided better performance at a cheaper price than the version they picked up.  So far we haven’t heard any rumours NVIDIA will repeat a Super with the new RTX 5xxx family.

The performance has disappointed many reviewers, who were hoping for a jump in performance that matched what we saw with the RTX 5090.   That is not the case, Ars Technica is pretty sure they could match the performance of the RTX 5080 with a heavily overclocked RTX 4080 Super.  NVIDIA didn’t skimp on Multi-Frame Generation with the RTX 5080 and the 4x mode, when supported, does give the new card a big advantage at higher resolutions. 

As well, the redesigned shroud is the same as the RTX 5090 which will allow the RTX 5080 to be installed in a wider variety of systems, though you still have to deal with the 360W TGP.  The internal are a bit better than the previous generation, 5% more CUDA cores, a 67MHz increase to the boost clock and while the memory remains at 16GB it is GDDR7 and offers 960 GB/s of bandwidth compared to 736 GB/s.
